QII ick-Service Fea-ture. The quick-servicefeature brings about amore uniform and aquicker application ofthe brakes in a long trainduring service applica-tions. The rate of brake-pipe reduction for serviceapplications in the brake system is determined by the exhaust port in the brake valveand by the frictional resistance of the pipe. These being con-stant, it is plain that the longer the train the slower will be thepressure reduction in the brake pipe, and, as the distance from thehead of the train increases toward the rear of long trains, only avery slow reduction, if any, takes place, and consequently a veryslow application, if any at all, takes place. This slow rate of brake-pipe reduction not only results in a slow application but manytimes in the failure of individual brakes to apply. This is due toone of two things, namely, the air from the auxiliary reservoir pass-ing back to the brake pipe through the feed groove; or, in case of a. Fig. 49. Westinghouse Type K Freight Triple Valve 64 AIR BRAKES movement of the triple-valve piston, by the air leaking out past thepacking leather in the brake cylinder. The quick-service feature gives a rapid serial operation ofall brakes in service appHcation. This is accomplished by usingthe principle of the standard quick-action triple valve in emergencyapplications, namely, that of discharging brake-pipe air into thebrake cylinder; that is, in service applications some air from thebrake pipe passes into the brake cylinder. The result is that thequick-service feature insures the operation of every brake, reducesthe amount of air exhausted at the engineers brake valve and thepossible loss of air due to flowing back through the feed groove, and effects a saving of air. Uniform Release. Uniform release tends to permit the rearbrakes to release as so
