If clamping the valve-stemfails to keep the valve together, the back head should beremoved and clamped with blocks in the same manner asthe front head (Plate 70). If the valve is broken sobadly that steam cannot be kept from the exhaust, theengine should be prepared to be towed in. Broken Valve-Seat. If the valve-seat is broken, and it is a front admission bridge and the admission 190 BREAKDOWNS. and exhaust ports can be covered (Plate 71), the valve-stem should be disconnected and clamped there secure-ly, the connecting rod taken down and the crossheadblocked back. But if it is the back admission bridge, the valve should. When blocked in this manner, oneend of the cylinder is connected to the steam-chest, whichwill admit steam to the cylinder and against the pistonhead. Good blocking should always be used. The removing of the cylinder cock will allow steamto pass out of the cylinder if the valve should shift, andwill indicate that the valve has moved from its position. BREAKDOWNS. 191
