FLORICULTORAL SOCIETY DISCUSSES THE CHRYSANTHEMUM.—THE TREATMENT OF PLANTS AND CUT BLOOMS.—SELECT LIST OF VARIETIES.—EXHIBITS. At the monthly meeting of the New Jersey Floricultural Society, at Orange, March 5, Chas. Totty read a very practical paper on the chrysanthemum and its treatment, the subject matter being mainly the handling of the cut blooms. On the important matter of packing flowers for shipment Mr. Totty endorsed close, compact packing as against the, upright, loose method. He dwelt especially upon the necessity of having the stems well filled with moisture before packing and recommended in the case of close, woody-fibred varieties, such as Merza, that the stems be punctured just below the water line when in vases. Mr. Totty gave the following as his select list of varieties: White, Nellie Pockett, Mrs. Weeks, Mme. Carnot, Merza, Mrs. Robinson and Timoth3' Eaton. Yellow, Mrs. T. W. Pockett, Mabel Morgan, Col. Appleton, Gold Mine, Mrs. Thirkell, Yellow Carnot, Matthew Smith, Lord Salisbury, the two latter spotted with red but good. Pink, Mrs. Coombes, Marie Liger, A. J. Balfour, V. Morel, Mrs. Barkley, R. G. Richard- son. Other colors, Kate Broomhead, W. R. Church, T. Carrington, MilHcent Richardson, Chas. Longley and Lady Anglesey. The innovation of amonthly exhibition with the incentive of tour cups as premiums at the end of the year seems to be a success. On this occasion the exhibi- tors were
