In 1711these Indians aided the French against the English, (5) but in 1717 they were told that they need not ex-pect any missionaries to go there tolive. (6) During these two hundred yearsthe French had made very few settle-ments in the state, and though theSaginaw valley seemed to be wellknown, not even a permanent tradingpost had been established here.
