Aerial view of floating algae on Lake Natron, Tanzania

Floating algae form abstract patterns and compositions on the lake surface. Depending on rainfall, the lake's alkalinity can approach that of straight ammonia, and when the lake is flooded with water that has heated underground, its temperature can reach a scalding 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit). Mount Gelai, a distinct volcano in the background. Located in northern Tanzania Lake Natron is a hot and forbidding environment.
