Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Walking stick head and mouthparts (Diapheromera femorata). The northern walkingstick (Diapheromera femorata) is a species of phasmid or stick insect found across North America. The insect is found in deciduous forest throughout North America, where it eats many types of plant foliage. It prefers foliage from oak and hazelnut trees. Because of its shape, this insect is also commonly called the stickbug, spectre, prairie alligator, devil's horse, witch's horse, thick-thighed walking-stick, or common walkingstick. Outbreaks of defoliation are limited since the walkingstick does not have wings. Magnification: x18 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
