Theaction upon these coasts isso rapid as to attract theattention of the inhabitants,and calculations even havebeen made as to the timethat will probably elapse be-fore they will have disap-peared. Rocks that haveformed a part of PlumbIsland may now be ob-served, at low water, a mileor more from the presentshore. Little Gull Island(to the east of Plumb Isl-and), on which a light-houseis located, was disappearingso rapidly, a few years since,that it became necessary toprotect it from the furtherinroads of the ocean by en-circling it with a strongsea-wall. Oyster-Pond Point iswearing away rapidly, bythe combined action of thewaves during heavy north-east storms, and the strongtidal current which flowswith great velocity throughPlumb Gut.
