Wireless charging of an electric vehicle. Illustration showing an electric car being charged wirelessly, using inductive charging. An induction coil (orange) under the surface beneath the car creates an alternating electromagnetic field (grey rings), which induces a current (orange) in a second induction coil (centre) fitted to the car itself. This current charges the battery (rear of car) and powers the engine. Researchers are developing electric transport systems where the vehicles draw power from cables underneath the surface of the road.
