It is difficult to make a good lawn in shady places, but the grasses in the rec- ommended mixture can be encouraged to grow better in the shade by liberal wa- tering, the use of extra quantities of fer- tilizer and possibly lime. The best available grass for shady places is red fescue of the variety known as Chew- ing's fescue. It requires the same treat- ment as the mixture, except that no lime should be used. SPRINGFIELD, O. Florists' Club Holds Show The Springfield Florists' and Growers' Club recently staged an individual trial bed contest for the growers of Spring- field and vicinity. Entries were made under five classes: Roses, geraniums, dahlias, cannas and miscellaneous. The tour of inspection and judging of the various trial beds was held Thurs- day afternoon, September After the local beds were judged, the party motored to Urbana, where a miscel- laneous display, entered by J. G. Botkin & Sons, was judged. Dinner was served at 6 p. m. in the display room of the J. G. Botkin & Sons greenhouses. After this the regular meeting of the club was held. President Fred Binnig announced the awards made by the judges, Frank E. Good, J. A. Doyle and Harold McGregor, as follows: Reeser Plant Co., Spring- field, silver cup for display of cannas; Good & Reese Co., Springfield, silver cup for display of dahlias; Highland Floral Co., Springfield, silver cup for display of ro
