Many rivers traverse this southern region, the chief being theSundays River, the Gamtoos, the Gouritz, and the Breede. Withthe exception of the Breede these rivers rise in the escarpmentof the interior plateau. In their upper courses they cross theGreat Karroo and therefore contain little water except after theoccasional rains. But where they enter the Southern FoldedRegion they are joined by longitudinal tributaries, and, since thisis a region of heavier rainfall, these streams in their lower coursesare more or less perennial and are utilized for irrigation. These A-B LmglfcuiW V*Jby»P Poors or JGv«r,. tfrxxXu* v\ FOLDED KEGIOI to kMOVO*. southern rivers are extremely interesting. At intervals they havecut through the mountain ranges gorges of surpassing splendour, and by these transverse ravines the drainage of one longitudinalvalley escapes into the next. Meirings Poort and Tover WaterPoort in the Great Zwarteberge are striking examples of thesedeep and narrow defiles, their steep walls rising in precipitouscliffs hundreds of feet above the floor of the gorge. The wholeregion affords a good illustration of the control exercised overcommunications by relief, for the alternation of ridges and valleysmakes the construction of transverse lines of communicationvery difficult. 2. The western section of the Folded Region extends from thecoast northwards to the Van Rhyns Dorp district. About midwaythe mountains are pierced by the remarkable Tulbagh the south of this kloof are the Vogel Vallei Mountains, theDrakenstein Range and the Hotte
