Visitors to Portsmouth Naval base pose for photographs by a bust of Admiral Lord Nelson. Portsmouth Naval Base has been and integral part of the city since 1194 and is home to almost two-thirds of the Royal Navy's surface ships, including the aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates and a mine countermeasure squadron. It is also home to a fishery protection and training unit. The base is a major employer in the Portsmouth area, with 17,200 people working at peak times.
