The institution has had connected with it, from the opening ofthe preparatory school in September, 1870, to the first of May,1880, eight hundred and sixty-four students. Of this number,sixty-four have been graduated, the majority of whom have eitherentered the learned professions or are engaged in teaching. The careerof the College has been one of great prosperity. By dint of liard laborand persevering effort on the part of the Faculty, and through thedevotion of its friends, Carthage College has attained a high posi-tion among the educational institutions of the State, and mayjustly be regarded as the pride and ornament of Hancock 27 CHAPTER XVII. THE POOR. The care and maintenance of the poor—the most sacred dutythat can devolve on human government, next to that of providingthat there shall be no poor—has cost Hancock county large sumsannually. This has been owing not so much to the great numberrequiring aid, as to the want of system in applying it. In the ear-lier history of the county this duty was performed in an imperfectand slovenlj manner, by donations from the public funds ; andwhile many were allowed to suffer others not so much in need weretoo freely supplied. At length a farm was purchased and a plain frame building putup for the accommodation of the countys paupers; and the systemadopted of letting the farm and the keeping and maintenance ofthe poor to the lowest bidder. This system in its very nature offered apremium to injustice; and it is not saying too much to assert thatunder it
