After a months steady marching they crossedto the south side of the Arkansas, about nine miles belowBents Fort. Here they made a brief stop in order thatthe various detachments might come together and marchinto the country of the New Mexicans as one effective Entering New Mexico. — Crossing the Raton Passand following the trail by the Wagon Mound, Kearnyentered Las Vegas on the morning of August 15, assembled THE AMERICAN OCCUPATION 135 the people in the plaza (plasa), or public square, andaddressed them through Antonio Roubidoux, the inter-preter (sec. 132). He absolved them from all allegianceto the Mexican government and to General Armijo andproclaimed himself governor, promising protection totheir persons, property, and religion, the weak as wellas the strong; the poor as well as the rich.
