The market lecture at the County Laboratories,Chelmsford, on Friday last, was delivered by Steel, of Prittlewell, on the field culture ofthe potato. Mr. Steel, at the outset, brieflyalluded to the introduction of the potato intothis country, observing that it was first used onlyas food for cattle. Touching upon the chemicalconstituents of the potato, he pointed out thatfrom these they could not expect great musclepower to grow out of it. He wished to deal with the question from hispersonal experience of growing for market pur-poses. The most important factor was to securea plant fresh and full of internal vigour and familylife. They should get the seed from a distantdistrict. The conditions of irregular growth didnot prevail where the plants grew year by yearto type, and retained the full vigour of the first, and perhaps cue most important,element in potato growing was assured.
