Theclass originally consisted of sometwenty-six factory hands who graduallylost their interest In the studies, and hefinally became the only student of theclass which continued during the entireschool year. It was during these , at which he was the only stu-dent, that a sympathetic friendshipsprang up between the boy and G. Maeser—a friendship that be-came increasingly intimate during DrMaesers life. At the age of seventeenhe entered the academy as a regulaistudent and was a membei- of its firstgraduating class in the year 1878, thus. becoming one of the first tea-chers whohad graduated from the remained at the academy as ateacher of various subjects, especiallyof mathematics, fiom his nineteenth tohis twenty-fifth year. In 1879 he wasengaged in engineering work in the con-struction of the Denver and Rio Granderailroad, and in 1882 was appointed citysurveyor of Provo. In 1884 he left fora misison to Germany. In view of hisprofession as teacher he traveled ex-tensively in America and Europe onhis way to the missionary field, and wasfinally assigned to the Berlin confer-ence. In the fall of 1885 he was trans-ferred to Turkey for the purpose ofopening a mission in the Sultans do- minion.
