Roman revelers at drinking party have little horns, reminiscent of satyrs, mythical followers of the Dionysus, the god of wine.
The ancient Romans, like the ancient Greeks, often followed their dinners with a drinking party that went many hours into the night. A master of the revelry was usually chosen and all those in attendance had to obey his commands. The attendees would drink to the health of each other, play games (cottabus was a favorite), and tell riddles. In this 1800s illustration, based on an ancient Roman painting, the revelers have little horns, reminiscent of satyrs, mythical followers of the Dionysus, the god of wine. Satyrs were depicted with small horns growing at the top of the forehead.
