The memorial plaque on the wall above the newspapers is entitled 'Humphrey Booth the Elder' and reads: 'These buildings are erected on land forming part of the original endowment of Humphrey Booth the Elder, who was born in Salford in 1580 and set up the Charity of Humphrey Booth the Elder by Deed of Foeffment dated 18th February 1630 to aid poor, needy or frail people in Salford.' Humphrey Booth the Elder was a rich fustian merchant of Manchester and Salford, who granted lands, 5 fields and a barn in the area of Piccadilly and Oxford Street, with an annual income of £20. The Charity distributed money grants, also providing clothing and blankets for the poor. The stacks of newspapers, in front of the Dry Riser', include copies of the 'Manchester Evening News' and 'City Life Magazine'.
