The old City Hall was built in 1830. The land upon whichit was built was owned by Christ Church, and it was the in-tention of that organization to build its church upon it, butthere arose a great difference of opinion as to the propriety ofthe site, and when the city was looking for land upon which tobuild its first public building the church readily sold the tractand afterwards purchased the site at the corner of Main andChurch Streets, where the present Christ Church now stands. The basement of the City Hall was used as a lockup, thefirst section being devoted to the purpose having been thegloomy room on the northeast corner, afterwards known as themorgue. It was to this lockup that offenders were taken afterarrest, the watch making the arrest returning to his patrol was a stove in the room for use in the winter, and theprisoners kept warm and enjoyed themselves as best they could3.
