Watching the Day of the Dead procession 2005, Olvera Street, oldest part of Los Angeles, Southern California

Dia De Los Muertos celebrated 1st and 2nd December. The first is when the spirits of children are believed to return, the second when adults come back. All ages and walks of life are represented in these processions as they are in death. These childern are on the steps of the Hammel Building, built 1909, constructed as a machine shop by Marie Hammel. The architects were Hudson and Munsell and the Contractor was Henry Ross. Frank Arconti, secretary to the Italian Benevolent Society, operated a bicycle shop and hardware store here. He also acted as manager for the Italian Hall next door. When built, the stores opened onto Main Street. Currently they open onto Olvera Street. Olvera Street and Paseo de la Plaza are part of El Pueblo de Los Angeles.
