In ancient times, Phoenicia (present-day Lebanon) was known throughout the Mediterranean Sea as a land of traders and Phoenicians had trading ports around the Sea. Phoenicians prospered on the profits. Tyre was an important Phoenician seaport and a center for making the expensive royal purple dye, from the liquid in the murex shell. The illustration, which dates to 1882, shows Phoenician merchants and sailors buying and selling goods.
