View NNE of the remains of St Hilary's Chapel, Denbigh, Wales, UK, with the ruins of Leicester's Church (R), the modern town & Vale of Clwyd beyond. Chapel built around 1300 to serve the new walled town: the castle's town ward. The castle was begun in 1282 by Henry de Lacy with the support of King Edward I. Only the chapel's tower & a short section of the W wall survive. Below the chapel to the R are the remains of the only large new church built during the reign of Elizabeth I, begun 1578 by Robert Dudley, earl of Leicester. It was intended to replace the cathedral at St Asaph.
