Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany. Schlossgarten bar, bistro, cafe and museum sign at Stadtschloss (City Palace) or Residential Palace
The Stadtschloss (City Palace) or Residential Palace (Residenzschloss) of Darmstadt dates back to the thirteenth century. In the Mid-13th century the Counts of Katzenelnbogen built a moated castle. The Palace has been added to and rebuilt over the centuries and combines structures from 6 centuries. The Wallhäuschen (gate building) was built in 1627 by Jakob Müller and the Glockenbau (bell building) was built between 1663 and 1671 to the plans of the architect, Johann Wilhelm Pfannmüller. The last structural changes were made under Ernst Ludwig in the 18th century when French architect, Rémy de la Fosse drew up plans for a Baroque Palace. Only two of the four wings were completed – The Market Square wing and the Rheinstraße wing. In 1944 the Palace was almost completely destroyed but it has now been rebuilt and restored to nearly pre-war status. The Schlossmuseum (Palace Museum) is located in the older part of the Palace in the reconstructed rooms of the Kirchenbau and Glockenbau (church & bell buildings) and the Assembly rooms. It provides a record of the history of the House of Hesse, its connection to other European Dynasties and the history of Darmstadt as a royal residence. Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany.
