Salmon (Salmo sp.) eggs and newly hatched fish (alevins). All salmon return to rivers to spawn. The eggs are laid in gravel on the river bed in late autumn, but don't hatch until early spring. At first the alevins remain under the gravel feeding on their yolk sacs. Once that is depleted they feed on small invertebrates and the carcasses of male fish that have died after spawning.
