The early 1900s caption reads: "The People's Barricade in Prague. The year 1848 saw the uprising of the people everywhere in Europe, fighting their rulers to win constitutional liberty. In France and Germany, they were successful, but farther east they failed. In Bohemia, the story was a sad one. The citizens of Prague built barricades against the Austrian troops and the Austrian general hesitated to attack them. A chance shot, however, killed the general’s young and beautiful bride, whereon he assailed the citizens with such fury that they were completely crushed.”
