It will ever stand to the gloryof Pennsylvania that five companies of her militiawere the First Defenders of the City of Wash-ington and the guardians of the Capitol buildingand archives in April, 1861. That these minute men were all from interiorcities does not detract from the spirit of militaryardor and activity then pervading Philadelphia. Allof the then existent State militia commands in thiscity were included in the volunteer regiments fromPhiladelphia, which served under the
