Avro Lancaster Heavy Bomber Ghost of the Ruhr - Lanc Lankie - PA474 HW-R BQ-B Battle of Britain Memorial Flight


The Avro Lancaster four engine British heavy bomber in service with the Royal Air Force (UK) in WW2 from 1942. Primarily a night bomber it was also the "Dam Buster" used against Germany industry in the Ruhr Valley. Over 7 thousand were built. The aircraft shown, now part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is one of only two world wide that are airworthy. The BBMF states she was "assigned to Photographic Reconnaissance" as being built in 1945 hostilities had ended. BBMF also state "PA474 wears the markings of EE139, the 'Phantom of the Ruhr, a ton up Lancaster" and 'She sports the letters HW-R of the 'he Ton' on her port side and BQ-B of 550 on her starboard, effectively commemorating the crews of both Squadrons". The last operational Lancaster was retired in 1963 from the Canadian air force.
