Marble effigies of the VIII Duke and Duchess of Argyll inside Iona Abbey. The Duke George John Douglas Campbell was the 8th Duke of Argyll born on 30 April 1823 –and died 24 April 1900. He is remembered as the previous owner who had a vision that the Abbey could be a place of worship again. In 1874 he commissioned an architect to preserve the Abbey ruins. In 1899 he gifted the Abbey to the Iona Cathedral Trust and work restoration work commenced in 1902. The Duchess of Argyll is Ina McNeill of Colonsay is his third wife. The VIII Duke of Argyll was a Scottish peer, Liberal politician as well as a writer on science, religion, and the politics of the 19th century.
