View of the Gekka-mon Gate and the Shishin-den courtyard from the Nikka-mon Gate, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Kyoto, Japan
The current Kyoto Imperial Palace was reconstructed in 1855 after it had burnt down and been moved around Kyoto many times over the centuries. It was the residence of the Imperial Family until 1868 when the capitol was moved from Kyoto to Tokyo. The Jomei-mon Gate is one of three gates leading into the courtyard to the Shishin-den (Hall of State Ceremonies) courtyard (Dan-tei) covered with white gravel. In this view from the Nikka-mon Gate you can see the Gekka-mon Gate across the courtyard (Dan-tei) to the Shishin-den building.
