NGINEERING. closing at the transmitter of the short circuit 1, 2, 3, 4, the current of the battery E passes over theline to the receiving station. When the circuit of the transmitter is broken, the flow to line ceases ;and the return or static charge is neutralized by the magneto-electric discharge of M, which consistsof an electro-magnet with its armature permanently in contact with the poles. The recordinginstrument at tlje receiving station is shunted with a series of helices M, arranged on iron cores, the former being continuous, and the latter divided into sections, which may be connected or dis-connected by the insertion or withdrawal of iron contact plugs, so as to increase or diminish thelength of the core under the single inductive action. In this way the duration of the dischargefrom the helices may be adjusted to correspond with that from the line. The discharge from thehelices M^ will be in the reverse direction to the primary current, and will neutralize that portion
