Thomas Coke (1747–1814), a close associate of John Wesley, was the first Methodist Superintendent (bishop) and is known as the Father of Methodist Missions. Coke was consecrated as Supertendent by Wesley in September 1784 in Bristol, England. Coke then set sail for America where in late December 1784 the Methodist Episcopal Church was consecrated and Coke, along with Francis Asbury, were elected as superintendents.
