Chesbrough, Esq., Clti/ Engineer : Sir : I present herewith my Sixteenth Annual Report of theoperations of this department, it being for the year ending March31, 1870. The total quantity of water pumped during the year, was6,801,11:6,720 gallons, an increase of nearly 1,-127,000,000, orabout 26|- per cent, over that pumped the previous year. The daily average during 1868-9 was nearly llrf million gal-lons, although during the mouth of March, the average wasabout 16^ millions. During the past year the daily average was 18f millions, andthroughout the month of July it w^as over 20-i- millions. The following record will
