The connective tissue elementsare also altered in appearance. In general there is a tendency toflattening of the cells, so that they lie more or less parallel to thesurface. Many of them are thus spindle-shaped. This is espe-cially seen in the compact layer. In some parts the cells appearclosely packed together. Here and there are groups of decidualcells like those found at earlier periods, though, as a rule, they areof smaller size. The cell outlines are indistinct and the matrixhas a swollen appearance, taking on the ordinary stains a good many places vacuolation is found both in the nucleiand in the cell matrix.
