The traditional “Burial of the Sardine” ceremony takes place in Madrid to give an end of the Carnival celebrations and begining the 40 days lent before Easter. It consists of a parade that parodies a funeral in which a symbilic figure in the shape of a sardine is burned. This festivity coincides with Ash Wednesday and symbolizes the burial of the past and the rebirth of society. The parade started at the Royal Chapel of St. Anthony of La Florida and ran though the main streets of the area gathering hundreds of citizens.
