The encyclopædia britannica; a dictionary of arts, sciences, literature and general information . ry circuit one portion is dissipated by the heat generatedin the primary and secondary circuits by the currents, and anotherportion by the iron core losses due to the energy wasted in the cyclicalmagnetization of the core; the latter axe partly eddy current lossesand partly hysteresis losses. In open magnetic circuit transformers the core takes the form ofa laminated iron bar or a bundle of iron wire. An ordinary induc-tion coil is an of this description. It has been shown, however, by careful experiments, that for alternating current trans-formation there are very few cases in which the closed magneticcircuit transformer has not an advantage. An immense numberof designs of closed circuit transformers have been elaborated sincethe year 18S5- The principal modem types are the Ferranti, , Brush, West in gho use. Berry. Thomson-Houston and representations of the arrangements of the core andcircuits in some of these transformers are given in fig. A B C Fig. 3.—Diagrams of (A) Mordey (in section), (B) Kapp and (C) Ganz Transformers. I, I Primary circuit; 2, 2 Secondary circuit. Alternating current transformers are classified into (i.) Coreand (ii.) Shell transformers, depending uf>on the arrangementsof the iron and copper circuits. If the copper circuits are woundon the outside of what is virtually an iron ring, the transformeris a core transformer; if the iron encloses the copper circuits, itis a shell transformer. Shell transformers have the disadvantagegenerally of poor ventilaton for the copper ciraiits. Berry, however, has overcome this difficulty by making the iron circuitin the form of a number of bunches of rectangular frames whichare set in radial fashion and the adjacent legs all embraced bythe two copper circuits in the form of a pair of concentriccylinders. In this manner he secures good ventilation and aminimum ex
