An August 1953 view of the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lungomare Marconi, Lido di Venezia, Venice, Italy, the main headquarters for the Venice International Film Festival – The 14th annual was held that year. A kiosk in the shape of a windmill promotes ‘Moulin Rouge’, a 1952 movie directed by John Huston ¬ it won the Silver Lion. The Palazzo del Cinema was built in the Modernist style, designed by Luigi Quagliata, and opened in 1937. It featured a hall and a 1032-seat screening cinema (right). It was expanded in 1952 when Quagliata’s frontage was built (centre left) – a vintage 1950s photograph.

An August 1953 view of the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lungomare Marconi, Lido di Venezia, Venice, Italy, the main headquarters for the Venice International Film Festival – The 14th annual was held from 20 August to 4 September 1953. A kiosk in the shape of a windmill promotes ‘Moulin Rouge’, a 1952 British movie directed by John Huston. The film is set in Paris in the late 19th century, featuring the artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and the city's bohemian subculture in and around the burlesque theatre, the Moulin Rouge. This film was screened at the Festival and it won the Silver Lion. The Palazzo del Cinema was built in the Modernist style of the 1930s, based on a design by the engineer Luigi Quagliata, and opened on 10 August 1937 for the 5th Festival. It featured a simple hall and a 1032-seat screening cinema (here seen right). Following the continued success of the festival, it became necessary to expand the building, which was entrusted to Quagliata, and built in 1952. The project was meant to include the expansion of the Great Hall, plus cinemas and offices. However, only the frontage and the uncovered arena were built (here centre left). This image is from an old amateur 35mm Ilford colour transparency. It will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1950s photograph.
