The Crankshaft The next point to claim attention isthe function of the crankshaft and thecamshaft on rotary and stationary en-gines. On a stationary engine the chiefduty that the crankshaft has to performis to transmit the power given to it bythe pistons to the propeller which it isdriving. In the case of a rotary en^mthe crankshaft has many more functionsto perform. The following list gives arough idea of the many and varied func-tions of a rotary engine crankshaft. 1. A point of attachment for the en-gine to the plane. -. A point for the pistons and the cyl-inders to revolve around. 3. A point of attachment for the car-burettor. 4. The whole of the thrust from thepropeller is absorbed by it. 5. It conveys oil to the working parts. 6. The crank pin provides a fixedpoint against which the force of the ex-plosion can exert itself in revolving theengine. It will be noticed that the crankshaftfunctions partly as a camshaft, inas-. In studying rotary engines it is aswell to bear in mind that the followingsequence of build is general throughoutall the different types. Starting fromthe front or propeller end of the engine, and passing to the rear, the build is asfollows: The propeller boss is mountedon the nose piece which is attached tothe front of the cam box, this in turnbeing held to the front of the which the cylinders are to the rear of the crankcase isthe thrust box, containing the thrustraces, which absorb the thrust of thepropeller or air-screw, as the case maybe. Bearing this particular form of build o6 CANADIAN MACHINERY Volume XXI. in mind will enable the reader to locatequickly the position of any part of theengine. Centrifugal Force EffectCentrifugal force plays an importantpart in a rotary engine. Any body
