In the fall of 1904 he was called to the 342 UNIFERSITT OF MICHIGAN University of Michigan as Assistant Professor ofMineralogy, and in igo6 he was advanced to therank of Junior Professor. He is a Fellow of theAmerican Association for the Advancement of Sci-. LOUIS A. STRAUSS was born in Chicago,Illinois, March 26, 1872, son of Abraham andErnestine (Leopold) Strauss. His parents wereboth of German birth. He came up through theChicago public schools, and was graduated from theUniversity of Michigan with the degree of Bachelorof Letters in 1893. The following vear he receivedthe degree of Master of Philosophy on was assistant in English in the University from1893 to 1S95. From 1895 to 1904 he was Instructorin English. In 1904 he was advanced to the rankof Assistant Professor, and in 1906 to that of JuniorIrofessor. In October, 1900, he received fromthe Lhiiversity the degree of Doctor of Philosophy KDWARD HENRV KRAUS ence and the Geological Society of America ; also,a member of the American Chemical Society, theMichigan Academy of Science, tlie Onondaga Acad-emy of Science, of which he was president in 1903and 1904, and the New York Science IeachersAssociation, in which he was chairman
