Spanish moss hangs from a live oak tree and resurrection fern covers the branches, July 1, 2021, in Coden, Alabama. Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) tends to grow in warm, humid climates and can be found throughout the southeastern United States. Spanish moss is an epiphyte and derives its nutrients and water from the air and rain. It is commonly called an “air plant.” Though it does not kill trees, as many people commonly believe, it can stunt the trees’ growth by blocking the light that would normally reach the leaves. It also increases the trees’ wind resistance, making them vulnerable during storms. Because of its prevalence, Spanish moss is commonly associated with the South and Southern Gothic imagery.
