Causes.—This accident is generally occasioned by a fall upon thefoot when the leg is thrown backwards behind the centre of gravity;as in a fall from the back end of a wagon, the foot being instinctivelythrown backwards in order to save the head; or it may happen to aperson who, while walking, suddenly puts one foot into a hole, inconsequence of which the pelvis advances, but the leg and upper partof the body incline forcibly backwards. Occasionally it has resultedfrom a fall upon the back of the pelvis, or from a severe blow receivedupon the same part.
