Eridanus constellation, 15th century artwork. Engraving of the Eridanus river god and the Eridanus Flumen (Eridanus River), with Latin text. This river has been identified with various rivers, including the River Po in Italy, the River Styx in the underworld, and (by Hyginus) the River Nile in Egypt. The black asterisks show the position of the stars that make up this constellation. This artwork is from the 1482 edition of Hyginus's Poeticon Astronomicon (Poetic Astronomy). This 1st-century BC star atlas was republished several times in the medieval period with woodcut engravings of the stars and constellations.
