The station takes its name from Spicheren in Lorraine, France, site of the 1870 Battle of Spicheren. The U9 portion of the station, designed by Bruno Grimmek, has a centre platform with a North and a South exit. The platform space was renovated in1986/87 using white tiles on the walls and columns with a pattern of coloured tiles on the walls. The design by Gabriele Stierl represents a piece of music for an ensemble of 12 instruments in a reference to nearby Berlin State School of Music and the Performing Arts. The panelled ceiling has a central yellow dividing line The U3 section of Spichernstraße station has side platforms and exits on both end. This part of the station still has pale blue tiled walls
