Child with cleft lip
Child with a cleft lip and palate. A cleft lip and palate is a birth defect in which there is a split in the midline of the palate (roof of the mouth) that extends to the upper lip. This is due to failure of the two sides to fuse during embryonic development. Cleft lips and palates can be repaired by surgery.
