Clachtol Iron Age broch, Sutherland, Scotland, UK, looking SW from the outwork wall to the triangular lintel over the broch entrance. A path runs from a gap in the wall through the remains of huts to the broch entrance where the last part of the path is lined & roofed. Since this photo was taken in 1987 Clachtoll has undergone a major campaign of excavation & repair. The circular inner court, the entrance passage & the area between broch & outwork have been cleared of rubble. The passage has checks for a door & a guard cell on each side. There is a mural cell accessed from the court & a gallery around the S arc with stone steps up to a gallery at first floor level: although the broch has collapsed it still stands in places to over 3m above bedrock. The broch is built directly on outcrops beside the beach of Stoer Bay. The broch was lived in by a farming family for perhaps 100 years (mid C1stBC-midC1stAD) before it was hurriedly abandoned when a fire caused a sudden collapse: 100s of everyday items were left behind. Historic Assynt community group, Historic Environment Scotland, AOC Archaeology Group & engineering students were involved in the work 2007-2021 to protect, study & make the broch accessible.
