Thereare other forms of dampening machines, but the gen-eral type of machine in use is one already described. The machine shown in Fig. 24 dampens the skirtof the shirt only, after which the skirt is laid over thebosom of the shirt, thus, in a measure, dampening onthe same principle as by the use of sheets. This is avery good plan of dampening, and it is very successful. In any form of a dampening machine perfect damp-ness is not at first obtained, as only certain portionsof the garment receive the moisture, while the othersremain dry. If the goods were dampened sufiicientlyat first to moisten the whole surface, they would be too — 80. Figr. 25. HYDRAULIC OR STEAM SHIRT PRESS. (A. T. Hagen Co.) — 81 — damp to iron. To avoid this trouble they are onlypartially dampened and are then allowed to remain inthis condition long enough to allow the moisture topenetrate from the moistened portions into those thatare not moistened. In time all the moisture in thegarment will be thoroughly distributed in every aid this process the dampening press is a necessaryadjunct. When the goods are placed in this machineand firmly pressed together, it brings the fibre in closercontact, and uniformity in the dampness is broughtabout much more quickly than when the goods are notsubject to pressure. There are many forms of shirt presses on the mar-ket, but the most practical plan for large quantities ofnew work is to press the work in a damping-box andallow it to remain in these boxes until it is ready forironing.
