Vice-President Thomson has been connected with thecompany since March 7, 1S64, having in the meantime served asclerk, assistant secretarv and secretary, his promotions being entirelydue to his ability and the careful and faithful discharge of his manyduties. Secretary Crowell entered the service of the company inOctober, 1S73 ! was elected assistant secretarv January 10, 1881,and secretary, September 1, 1890. Assistant Secretary Merrill waselected to the office at the same time. He has been surveyor of. the company for many years. Under conservative and carefulmanagement the business has prospered, and the company earlysecured the confidence of the community. Its charter was madeperpetual and the capital stock was placed at |200,ooo, with sharesof {100 each, at which figure it remained stationary for a consider-able period, but at length it was increased to $400,000, paid up,where it has since remained. One hundred shares of the stockwas all that could be owned by any one person and it was stipulatedthat in all such cases the par-ties should be citizens or resi-dents of the United States. Sogreat was the popularity of themovement that when the firstinstallment of $10 per shaiewas paid in, February 16, 1S25,the stock commanded a pre-mium of ten per cent, on thecash payment made.
