Itwas unique in the history of poli-tics, State and national. Yet nota line about it ever got into printbecause of the lateness of the hourat which it w^as held, and the failureof the telegraph company promptly todeliver the only story of the event whichwas written and sent over the wires fromthe scene of the gathering. The meeting was held at 12,30 oclock on themorning of October 10, at the town of Coalport, onthe Bells Gap Railroad. From 400 to 500 people,men and women, were present. Ten speecheswere made in less than an hour. There is aromantic story behind it all that goes back adozen vears. Years ago, no matter how long, a young mancame to General Hastings at his home in Bellefonte 103 and told him how he had been discharged fromhis place as station agent for some slight infractionof rules.
