Of these theancients had in use several kinds, viz. 1. (Xvxvovxos). A candle-stickfor holding tapers or candles of wax. and tallow. These were either madelike our own, with a socket andnozzle into which the end of thecandle was inserted (Varro, Sat hi. 4. Festus, s. v.) ;or with a sharp point at the end,like those so commonly seen in thechurches of Italy, upon which thebottom of the candle was stuck.(Serv. ad Virg. JEn. i. 727.) An ex-ample of the former kind is given inthe illustration, from an original foundat Pompeii; and an engraved gemof the Worsley Museum affords aspecimen of the last sort, in whichthe sharp point is seen projectingfrom the top. 2.
