Barley ready for harvest grown on the chalk of the South Downs National Park looking down towards Saltdean. The Downs stretch from Eastbourne in the east, through East and West Sussex to finish at the Itchen Valley in Hampshire. They comprise of rolling chalk landscape, with dry valleys and close cropped grassland, famous both now wnd in the past for sheep rearing. The soil, where improved, supports cereal whole area is popular with visitors, especially walkers and mountain bikers. The South Downs Way, a long distance footpath runs from Eastbourne to Winchester. The area is now protected as it was granted National Park status by the government in March 2009 and the park finally came into being on 1st April 2011.
