Waverley train station and clocktower in Edinburgh. This is the Balmoral Hotel with sight-seeing buses next to it.

The Waverley Train Station (and the bridge right next to it) is located right in the heart of the city of Edinburgh. The station is at a lower level than the road, and is fairly large, catering to all the tourists who arrive in the city from London and other locations in the country. Unlike train stations in many other cities and countries, the train station here is surrounded by greenery, and make a nice picture Waverley Train Station is massive, covering an area of around 25 acres (and is the second largest railway station in Great Britain, next only to London Waterloo). In terms of Scotland, it is the second busiest train station after Glasgow Central. The station is located in a low area, being located in a valley which was earlier actually holding a lake, called Nor Loch (which was created in the 15th century as a defensive mechanism and which grew filthy over the next few centuries until it was finally drained and started being used for alternate purposes by the year 1820). In the 1840's, there were train stations built in this valley which were combined to become the Waverley train station (named after the books by Sir Walter Scott). In 1868, all of these existing stations were demolished and a new one built, which was extended in the late 19th century. In the distance, to the right is the Balmoral Hotel. This was originally called the North British Hotel, constructed in the year 1902. After many years of operation, the hotel was sold to the Forte Group in 1983 by British Rail, and was then closed in 1988 for an year for restoration and re-modeling, and was then re-opened as the Balmoral Hotel. The hotel enjoys a strategic location in central Edinburgh. Above the train station is the place where sight-seeing buses start off, providing hop on and hop off bus tourist bus services for those wanting a tour of Edinburgh.
