SEED FOB HABDY PERENNIALS. I am anxious to procure seed for some good hardy perennial carnations or pinks which can be planted in the field and will bloom from May on. I have read of Dianthus Her Majesty and Perpetual Snow in white, but have not been able to find the seed listed in a catalogue. I should like to have a good white, a good pink and a good red one. Can you give me the cultural directions and refer me to someone who can furnish the seed? W. S. C—Ore. I do not know of anyone listing seeds of the carnations or hardy pinks you refer to. Consulting a number of seed lists, I can only find mixed hardy carna- tion seeds offered and think that it will be necessary for you to procure the plants of the varieties Her Majesty, Perpetual Snow, Napoleon III, crimson, and others of this type. Propagation is usually either by cuttings or layers. The various forms of Dianthus pluma- rius, spice, or hardy border pink, are pro- curable from seeds, but come more easily from layers. Tn your latitude the race of hardy carnations which thrive so well in Great Britain would do well. These come in about every color but blue and the double flowers in nearly all cases have a delicious clove scent. Unfortunately, these cannot be imported now, as the Federal Horticultural Board fears that they may bring in some dangerous enemy alien insect pests. C. Wanted and For Sale Beparfment 9V*Advertl8eme
